Next Door Farms is where we reintegrate urban waste by using it to create nutrients that feed soils, people and industry. Our goal is to function as a closed-loop process for Denver and Colorado, combining urban organic waste, food production and energy generation in an integrated system. We are proud that Waste Farmers lives up to its name. We do not accept waste as inevitable byproduct of the way we live and work. Instead we are harvesting your resources and cultivating an eco-effective community.

Next Door Farms produces soil amendments including potting soil, worm castings and compost tea. Micro-greens and a robust array of fresh produce will soon be available Next Door. And watch our news. In the near future we’ll have an exciting announcement about the production of bio-based energy.

Why Compost Is Important

The deterioration of soils, urban waste disposal, and the growing distance between where food is produced and ultimately consumed are among the most serious challenges facing humankind as we attempt to feed a growing population. Consider this:

  • It takes anywhere from 20 to 1,000 years for a centimeter of soil to form.
  • At the same time, more than 70% of the world’s waste stream consists of organic material (food, paper, leaves etc).
  • The population is growing while the amount of land available for waste disposal is decreasing.
  • In 1980, there were 20,000 landfills in the U.S. Today there are approximately 1,400.
  • At least 10 states have only 1 to 10 years of remaining landfill capacity.
  • Environmental implications of landfill disposal include the loss of land area resources, potential leaching of hazardous materials into ground water, and emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere.

A key part of the solution to urban organic waste disposal lies in composting. The environmentally friendly compost products created from organic waste boost fertility by replenishing the soil with organic matter and, at the same time, keep organic waste out of landfills.
